Cattle Market Mobile

Track the price of cattle in a mobile app.

There are over 900,000 cattle and calf operations in the US. In 2016 this resulted in over $60 billion in farm cash receipts. There’s a lot of money in cattle, but making a profit requires hard work and planning.

Michael Whitt is an app developer with an agricultural background. He created Cattle Market Mobile in 2012 as a way for buyers and sellers of cattle to stay up to date on current market trends. Over the past five years he grew the app to track 300+ market reports with 20,000+ monthly users. A mutual acquaintance introduced us in early 2017 when he was looking for a designer.

Designing a Better Interface

Our goal was to improve people’s experience using Cattle Market Mobile. We had a clear idea of the scope of the project and were able to outline goals far in advance. This made a hybrid method of design the clear choice in implementing a process.

slide1
Launch Page

The most important information is at the top of the page. As people scroll down they get more detailed info.

slide2
Favorites Page

5/5 people I did user interviews on mentioned they wanted a way to save their favorite market reports.

slide3
States Page

This pop-up slider gives people a chance to be more specific about the type of repair service they need.

slide4
Market Reports Page

I added a call to action button encouraging people to view the report.

slide5
Futures Page

Our user research showed that people wanted a screen to view investment futures data.

My research included creating surveys, conducting user interviews, and doing user testing. Two major pain points emerged. People wanted a way to track future data for cattle and other livestock. They also wanted a way to save their favorite market reports. Michael already had variations of these features in the app. We tweaked their capabilities and made them more prominent by putting buttons on the home page.

My initial plan was just to update the layout. However, Zach produced ideas that not only improved the visual aspects of the app, but also greatly improved the user's overall experience.

Michael and I achieved our goal of improving people's experience using the app. I was able to identify problems people were having and create mock ups that fixed those issues. Michael did an amazing job implementing the changes. It’s been a pleasure to work with him. I'm looking forward to continue making changes and improving Cattle Market Mobile.
